Nacre-like alumina composites reinforced by zirconia particles

Nacre-like alumina is a class of bio-inspired ceramic composite manufactured by field-assisted sintering green bodies made primarily platelets with an anisotropic microstructure. Here we investigate the addition zirconia particles to enhance mechanical properties composite. The resulting structure nacre-like which features deflection and reinforcement during crack propagation. Monoclinic has no impact on while tetragonal improves its fracture resistance properties. Both types seem slow down grain growth sintering. stabilised in phase thus good option obtain fine microstructure higher than standard alumina, flexural strength 626 ± 39 MPa initiation toughness 6.1 0.6 MPa.m0.5.
